P001 → Wide Open Space

Wide Open Space is an exhibition by Deep See Survey artists Leyla Bulmer and Bri Horne, with guest artist Emma Shepherd. A retrospective of their time together on residency at Boketto, a home nestled in Yuraygir National Park. Inspired by the sweeping plains, rich tones and textures, and open skies of Yaegl Country, this group exhibition is an ode to wide open space — wide open nature, wide open mind, wide open body, wide open spirit, wide open time.

Exhibition: March 21 - 30, 2025
Opening event: Friday 21 5-7pm
Open Friday - Sunday: 11am - 3pm
Open Monday - Thursday: by appointment (e: hello@brihorne.com)

INDIVIDUAL ARTIST STATEMENT

What role does wide open space play in the creative process? If space and time were always left wide open, would artworks get finished and shared with others? Where does wide open space sit in the human experience? In the chaos and fast pace of being a human on earth, how can we find, or rather, create, pockets of space? And when we find ourselves in the space wide open, what then? Can we slow down or do we find ourselves grasping at the tempting tendrils of productivity?

The process of bringing this body of work to life has been a following of what feels curious: be it an ongoing existential sensemaking exploration; a yearning to play with photographic works with my hands; or a deep presence of wanting to make art that gets in the body.

What an honour it was to spend time on Yaegl Country, and notice and feel the differences to Bunurong and Boon Wurrung Country through the senses.
